USDA researchers in Lubbock, Texas, have developed an artificial intelligence system that uses muzzle images to detect pinkeye in cattle. This contactless monitoring technology aims to help producers identify health issues earlier, potentially reducing treatment delays and cutting labor costs associated with manual herd inspections.
High Accuracy in Disease Detection
A study of 870 cattle across four locations tested the effectiveness of muzzle-image recognition in identifying 170 animals that developed pinkeye. The AI system successfully flagged 169 cases before veterinarians identified the illness, allowing for faster isolation and treatment. By detecting the disease early, producers can limit eye damage, weight loss, and transmission rates within the herd.
Contactless Identification and Thermal Screening
The researchers reported a 99.4 percent sensitivity rate and a 97.6 percent specificity rate during the trial. Muzzle recognition technology offers the ability to connect health records to individual animals without the need for manual ear tag scanning. Ongoing research is also evaluating infrared eye temperatures and automated behavior monitoring to screen for fever and heat stress in feedlots and dairy facilities.
Future health monitoring systems could integrate fixed cameras, thermal measurements, and veterinary records with smartphone images. Commercial feasibility will eventually depend on field validation, calibration, and the cost of maintaining connectivity in large-scale livestock operations.
